I recently had trouble finding some night time reading - has to be paper or Kindle so it doesn't interfere with my sleep - when I realized I have scads of unread books ON MY BOOKSHELF. *facepalm* I got Noodling for Flatheads and Rebel Raiders in library used book sales years ago and kept meaning to read them so I could get them off my shelf.

Through a completely random coincidence, I just finished 4 books in a row by Englishmen. With Ben Aaronovitch's latest "Rivers of London" book, Foxglove Summer, and the new Nick Hornby, Funny Girl, inhaled is a better word to use: I finished both within 20 hours of acquiring them. oops. I'm not really sure how the most interesting book I read in 2012 and one of the few related books I read in 2013 never got LJ reviews, considering how many people I've recommended them to. Apparently the only books I really enjoyed from my 2012 reading were Tierney and Baumeister's Willpower and Dan John's Never Let Go, which is doubly interesting ( Read more... )

I kept borrowing Ned Sublette's The World that Made New Orleans before trips to that city, but never got around to reading it until I bought it. I was looking for a good travel book, something that would give context to the city, like Elizabeth Nash's book about Madrid.
